We have a lot of information in this newsletter, please look over it carefully.

We also have our spring Show and Competition coming up on April 1st, and the information in this newsletter will help you get prepared.

Here's the February newsletter if you missed it last month.
The Prez Sez ...

Hi, All,

I hope you're enjoying the best weather that Houston has to offer and the sight of so many gorgeous flowering shrubs. I have been known to suddenly stop the car and jump out to take a photo of flowering magnolias or the sun shining through the blossoms on a pale pink azalea. This behavior is not to be recommended! ( But I do get some great shots!)

Last month at the general meeting our guest speaker, Amy Slaughter, a local lawyer and member of KAS, gave a very interesting talk on copyright. Amy's information was well researched and very informative. Many issues were raised, some we had never even thought of. For example, how many of us knew that a person may own a painting but not necessarily own the copyright to it? The artist retains the copyright to a painting even if it is sold. It is reassuring to know that we have access to Amy for legal advice on our art questions.

Our next demo artist will be Nancy Lee, who is known to many of the members for her work for LSAG. She is a wonderful floral artist who also happens to be a really fun individual, so be sure not to miss the meeting on March 20 th. And don't forget to finish your artworks for the Spring show on April 1 st - KAS needs all your entries. You can download your entries on the KAS website or they will be sent out with the newsletter.

Anyone who is interested in the workings of KAS with a view to participating on the Board or committee or any newly elected official is welcome to attend the KAS Board meetings. In fact, it is recommended. At this stage, we have no member who has volunteered to take over the job of President of KAS when my term is up in May. Linda Dumas has generously offered to take over the duties of president until someone else comes forward. As Linda already has the huge task of organizing the Fine Arts Festival with Kristin, we need someone to step in as President before too long. If someone will consider doing this, please contact Linda.

Our Board meeting this month is at Hunan Garden restaurant in the HEB shopping center on Kingwood Drive, corner of West Lake Houston Parkway. It will take place at 11:00am on Monday, 6 th March. Hope to see you there.

Regards,
Your Prez,
Linney Hamilton

At our Next Meeting

Kingwood Art Society welcomes Artist- Nancy Lee for a demo in Florals March 20th, 7 PM at Fire and EMS Heritage Center in Kingwood. The Heritage Center is located at 2825 Town Center Park, Kingwood.

After moving from Maine to Texas in 1974. Nancy’s early childhood interest in art was reawakened and she began taking painting lessons again. She became active in several art Leagues. She was the treasurer of the Sugar Land League for 2 years and headed their judged shows for 5 years. Nancy served as President of the Lone Star Art Guild in 2002-2003. She has served as the LSAG Webmaster for the last 4 years. She is currently a member of the Northwest Art League. Ms Lee is an accomplished Oil painter whose art works have won several awards in local shows. Her artwork has been displayed in several galleries including the Southwest Gallery, the Midlane Gallery, Art etc., and Magnolias.

Nancy says, “About 4 years ago, I became inspired by San Antonio artist Vie Dunn- Harr. So far, I have taken 9 workshops from Vie and have become enthralled by her techniques and now use them in my own work. As a result, my artwork has taken a major leap and, in doing this demonstration for the Kingwood Art Society I want to show you how exciting her methods are and how they will revitalize your own artwork with a sense of freshness and spontaneity.”

There will be a short general meeting afterward. Public are welcome to attend.

About our Judge

Don Lietzau has agreed to judge the show. He has been painting for 50 years. He is not only a painter, but also an illustrator and designer. He is also the owner of Silver Fox Productions. Don has given many demos and workshops and has participated in several major art shows throughout the country.

Lietzau’s major fine art commissions include: Cardinal Deardon of Detroit, MI; Judge Louis Moore of the 29 th Circuit Court, Houston; Ruth Sneed, Ruth Sneed Elementary School in Alief, TX; and many other major portrait commissions.

Lietzau also creates family legacy paintings. “I take old family photos and weave them into vignettes that tell a story. I’m the only person doing that kind of work, I believe”. He also has a thriving business painting from wedding photos.

In college, Don worked at the State Fair doing pastel portraits. He writes: “Putting a portrait together with transparent washes intrigues me. Watercolor has a mind of its own; if you let it do its thing, it is a beautiful effect.”

Minutes from our February Meeting

GENERAL MEETING MINUTES - February 20, 2006

The meeting was called to order at 7:10pm by Linney Hamilton. Member and guests were welcomed. Our Demo for the evening was Amy Slaughter, lawyer, who talked about copyrights in regards to artists. Amy was first an artist, then went to Law School. Her talk was very interesting, lasted about an hour and included questions and answers. You can reach her at amy@amyslaughterlaw.com

Our business meeting started at 8:30. Linney first called on Jim Grygier for a report on the Chamber. Exchange will be Wednesday - noon. Him said he would like to try having 1 artist with 1 piece of work at 1 luncheon a month. They would introduce themselves and work at the luncheon with a few sentences. Jim has one easel for the artist to use. He passed a list for anyone interested.

The minutes were read by Vanita Doyle and the Treasurer's Report was read by Matthew. We have a balance of XXX.

Correspondence - Vanita thanks the club for the Get Well card for her surgery. Linney has information on Artisans in Nature Show and current classes from WASH if anyone is interested.

Vanita reported on the hanging at the Golden Shears and pass around a list for signups. Linney called on Pat Wheeler who says the Demo for March will be Nancy Lee who will do oil in a watercolor matter. A gentleman from Florida, Doug Land, called Pat about doing a demo and workshop sometimes when he is visiting Houston. Pat told him maybe next year. He does drawings and sketching. Pat said that date of the paint out might be to be changed.

Pat told the member about and Open Air Show around the Community Center in Baytown that they could participate in. The Baytown Art League is sponsoring it on May 13. It is free. You set up your own booth and handle your own sales, etc. She passed around a sheet with information on it.

Sally Kullman said the Member Show was on schedule, but the judge would be Don Leitzau (watercolor) instead of Catherine Anderson. March 24th is the deadline for entries.

There was no report on the KFAF, or Publicity, where a new chairman is needed. Kristin Dumas is now doing the newsletter. Judy Richards and Pam Bachman are going to help out with the labels and mailing. The newsletter is on our website - Kingwood Art Society .

Membership - Judy Richards asked if you would let her know if there was an error with your information in the Year Book.

Old or Unfinished Business - Benches for AABY have been delivered and Kay would like them back as near the end of February as possible. The Garden Party is April 1 and bench artists will receive tickets to the Party. Kay would like a bio from each artist and wanted to know if any bench artist would like to be interview by Kingwood College TV Station.

New Business - Linney called on Linda Dumas to give a report from the Nominating Committee. Linda read the slate of officers the committee put together for next year.

The berets we ordered for members are here. Matthew said to pick one up, if you had paid you dues.

Linney asked if someone would take over the Library hangings. She said Connie Hauser would work with someone. Carol Showalter said she would talk to Connie about it.

Linney reminded the Board that the Board Meeting in March would be earlier in the month, March 6th at Hunan Gardens at 11. The membership is invited.

We had 2+ tables of Show & Tell. Lots of variety and very enjoyable. Meeting was adjourned at 9:30 by Linda Hamilton.

Respectfully Submitted, Vanita Doyle
