The Prez Sez ...

Greetings and Salutations!

If you're not into the wearin' o'the green in honor of St. Paddy, I guess you could bone up on the ways to make greens with the paints you have...try mixing every yellow you own with each blue. You will be amazed at the variety. Artists aren't like ordinary people. When non-artists think GREEN, they probably have Kelly green in mind. Artists think of sap, avocado, lime, apple, and an infinite range of hues. Aren't you glad to be one of the people who has the color perception gene? Aren't we lucky to be artists?

I wrote my first ever e-mail to THE ARTIST'S MAGAZINE. They invited response to some guy who wrote in urging them to devote more space to the political side of art—he maintained that we must use our art politically. I wrote in that art was for joy. We make art because we must—not to make a point. Anyhow—he has no right to assume that others NEED political education. Why doesn't he give them credit for a brain? Don't let anyone tell you what kind of art you need to make!

We have had some great demos this year—Pat Wheeler has really outdone herself in selecting and securing artists. We really enjoyed and learned from Diane Buckhout's demo. She was a great narrator who talked as she painted, and thoroughly explained what she was doing and why she was doing it. What a treat! Next up will be Janet Green, who will show BAS RELIEF, or art which is not in the round, but sticks up above the painting ground at least 1/4". I believe she will be using paint, so don't stay away 'cause you think it's a sculpture demo—although 2-D artists can learn a lot from artists who work in the round.

Your Prez
Linda D.

Spring Show & Competition

In order to participate in this Show & Competition, you'll need to apply using our registration form.

You can print the registration form.

Once again we are ready for our Show and Competition. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for helping to make our shows successful. I believe that we have a lot of quality talent in our Society and the work that is entered into our show always proves that to be true. I appreciate all of your hard work and look forward to this, our spring, 2008 competition to be a good one.

The show will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2008. Carlos Garza has again agreed to let us hold our show in Dillard’s. It will be on the first floor between the Shoe and the Jewelry/Handbag Departments. The best entry to the mall before 10:00 a.m. is between Sears and Barnes & Noble.

Set up will begin at 7:00 a.m. Anyone who can help set up for the competition should come at this time. Sine passed out sign up sheets at our February meeting. If you have forgotten what you signed up for, please contact either Sine or me. If you find you can help, please feel free to join us. Again, it is much appreciated.

LAST DATE FOR ENTRY IS MONDAY, MARCH 10TH.

Schedule of events is as follows:
    Check in: 8:00 a.m.
    Judging: 9:00 a.m.
    Open to public: 11:00 a.m.
    Critique: 1:00 p.m.
    Take down: 3:00 p.m.

A few things to remember:

  • Artists MUST pre-register by Monday, March 10, 2008.
Remember, you can mail these forms to me by Snail Mail or by e-mail.
My address is josalsal@embarqmail.net. If really pushed for time, you may register in advance by phone and pay at check-in-time but the sooner the better as this allows Sine and me time to organize the show. We really appreciate your help.
  • All work must be original. No sawtooth or “hole” clip hangers are allowed. If any piece is larger than 40X40, special arrangements must be made for display and a maximum of two oversized pieces are allowed
  • All work must be completely dry.
  • Ten entries are allowed per artist and ALL ART MUST HAVE BEEN COMPLETED WITHIN THE LAST 24 MONTHS.
  • Check our 2007/2008 yearbook for KAS and LSAG rules.

We are very lucky to get A.J. Schexnayder, A.W.S., N.W.S. as our judge. He is well known for his work in watercolor; however, he also produces etchings and works with pen and ink, pencil, egg tempera and acrylic. He portrays realistic images while expressing creative beauty in shapes, textures, and color in his paintings.

Mr. Schexnayder has exhibited in both state and national exhibitions including: the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor U.S.A., Texas Watercolor Society and Watercolor Art Society Houston International. His work has been selected, on several occasions, for circuit tours throughout the U.S. He has been teaching classes and workshops for the past 30 years.

Please visit his website, www.ajschexnayder.net to learn more about him and to view his wonderful paintings.

Entry forms can be found here. A copy can also be downloaded from www.kingwoodartsociety.com or www.lonestarartguild.org.

Please feel free to call me at (281) 358-5638 or call my cell (281) 433-1901. I will do what I can to make it easy!

I am looking forward to seeing you on SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 2008.

Your Show Chair,
Sally
