The Prez Sez ...

Hello my talented friends.

May will mark the final regular meeting of KAS for 2006-2007. Time just treads inexorably on, doesn't it? We will be having our next meeting after LSAG, so I hope that all our entrants will come out with some nice ribbons from the event. It's a great celebration of art and artists, and there will be some beautiful work to see. Being around creative people always gives us a boost.

I'll be doing the demo in May, and I will be passing on things I have learned from Gerald Brommer and other well-known and generous artists. Just his design sheet is well worth having. I hope you will come to give me moral support.

I want to thank the wonderful KAS board. The officers and committee chairs do a splendid job for the society. They work hard to keep us informed and out there. Just think of the time spent recording meetings, keeping account of the money, setting up competitions, and arranging demos, not to mention the work involved in putting out the newsletter, printing the yearbook, getting us in the papers, greeting and maintaining membership, keeping us in touch with the Chamber, and dragging around all the equipment necessary to get our shows on. This bunch of self-starters is responsible for our being able to do what we do as a society.

A great big thank you to our wonderful hosts at the Homewood Suites. There is no way anyone could have been any nicer or more accommodating. I feel that they have gone an extra FIVE miles for us. Please make a point of thanking them.

Thank you for the thoughts and prayers for Red. We appreciate your kindness, and are looking forward to finishing up the radiation treatments on May 15.

Member News: For the one who don't know, Peggy Tieman passed away on April 11th. She was a wonderful artist and a wonderful lady, and she'll be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her friends and family.
May Demo - Water Color Collage

Linda C. Dumas started with art as a child—drawing pictures and posters, doodling in her textbooks, and so forth. Her first commission was in high school, when she painted a large outdoor nativity scene for a family in her home town. She finally began oil painting lessons in the 70's. She came to clay in the early 90's and began extensive work in collage, in the late 90's. Right now her focus is collage, clay, and mixed media non-objective work. She loves art and loves being around creative people. She has won over 200 awards on the local, regional, and national levels, including back-to-back first place awards in LSAG's Abstract and Experimental category. She was in two national exhibitions in 2006 and was a finalist in The Artist's Magazine 2006 Competition.

"Making art is something I have always loved to do. When I was a child, there were no art classes in my small school, but I adored attending Vacation Bible School at our Methodist Church, because at crafts time you could "make stuff." I still am fascinated every time I enter my studio, grab a piece of paper, a canvas, or a handful of clay, enter the right side of my brain, and, with my hands, my pigments, my tools, transform those objects into something that speaks for me, to me, and, I hope, to others. Sometimes the message is profound, sometimes a bit frivolous. It really doesn't matter—art simply is, and I am an artist. That's good enough for me."

Linda recently got two pieces in the SLMM show this year. The show, Exploring Multiple Dimensions, will be in The Albuquerque Museumin Albuquerque, NM from July 14 - October 7. The pieces shown will be Uncle John Reads the Paper and Support Group. Both pieces are mixed-media collage.

Spring Show letters

I was delighted to receive the KAS check for Best of Show yesterday. I almost didn't bring my paintings because of the heavy rain and the long drive from College Station, but I am so glad I made the effort to arrive in town early enough for your show. I have never really entered shows for ribbons, although I have to admit this ribbon was quite a thrill for me. The two critiques I got from judge Tina S. after the show were so in-depth that I felt I had gotten a first-rate art lesson about figure painting, which is, of course, her specialty. I have always appreciated critiques, but hers was one of the two best I've ever been given, especially since I am making an effort to learn to paint figures. (The other was from Glenn Baum, a portrait artist.) Your show was easy to enter and beautifully hung, and I feel privileged to have been a participant. My thanks again to you and your membership for the check and for the opportunity to attend your show.

Sincerely,
Carol Martin

Members of KAS, thank you for the time, attention & care you gave to our art work. I appreciate your advice & feel that I have learned a great amount of improved thought for my future work. I also thank you for my 1st place check (that I did not expect)& of course my ribbon. Thank you for allowing me to participate.....a special thanks to Sally for extra help.
