The Prez Sez ...

Hello to all the beautiful and talented people!

Aren't we glad that we have the ability to express our creativity in such wonderful and rewarding ways. It's such a gift to be able to do art.

Our September meeting started off very well with a great demo by Vivian Pollock. Her scarves, wall hangings, and so forth done on silk with rich dyes are beautiful. We were so intrigued that we have asked for a workshop. You won't have to buy one new thing—she will furnish the materials. Pat Wheeler will work on it for us. Pat has gotten us some really wonderful demos in her term as VP in charge of demos and workshops.

We hope to see more of our members in October. Sally and 'Sine will be getting us ready for our Fall Competition and Show, so come to the meeting to get yourself in the mood—and mode. We need a really good and full show.

Arrangements for LSAG Convention in May of 2008 continue. Linney Hamilton is in charge of many of the arrangements, so when she calls on you, please agree to help.

See you soon,
Linda D.

October Demo - Betty Klasel

Betty Klasel will be doing a Pastel Landscape and she will show us how she uses Alcohol with her technique.

Betty began her study of art in 1978; although the desire to portray with brush and paint, the beauty and feeling of people, nature, and surroundings has been waiting to develop.

She studied extensively in oils with the late Dick Turner. She studied pastels with Bob Rohm. She participated in many various workshops with many teachers. Her art interest has taken her to study in several on-location areas to include France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Holland. She has won many awards and her paintings can be found in several areas in the United States and Germany. Presently, she paints to satisfy clients, peers, and self. This is a self-satisfying time in her life devoting her knowledge, ideas, and technical skills to others.

GIFT TABLE AT THE MEMBERSHIP SHOW
The Board suggested and the Membership agreed to have a HOLIDAY GIFT TABLE at the Membership Show in November. ALL ITEMS WILL BE PRICED $20 OR UNDER These will be items the membership donates to the Society and the money from the sales will go into our budget to help pay for the scholarships. This will be needed since we don't have the fine art show to raise money for the scholarships. BRING ITEMS TO THE OCTOBER MEETING OR THE MALL THE DAY OF THE SHOW. Please have your items looking neat and priced. Any questions, call Vanita Doyle 281-360-2489

HAVE ANY IDEAS for the Society?
The Board is looking for ways for the Society to sell their things and have exposure in the community. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Examples:

  1. A Studio Tour of different artist's homes in Kingwood.
  2. Renting a room for a show of our own (Anyone know of a free place, or one we might look into?).
  3. Demonstrating and showing a few pieces with another club who has a tour, or outing, (example-with the Garden Club - anyone know about that club?) .
  4. Is there a group who has fund raisers, where we could rent a table and sell our things?

We would like to hear from each and every one of you before the end of the year , so we can take all the ideas and form a small committee in Jan. and follow through and see if we can get something going. Call or e-mail Vanita Doyle at 281-360-2489 or vandon3@WorldNet.att.net

Debra Latham has created a KAS Flyer for all of us to hand out when we find a suitable location as we go about our daily business. We are looking for new ways to bring in new members and get out name out, and this flyer can help!

Special Mentions
Jim Grygier presented a speach at the Sept 11 King wood Toastmasters meeting exploring the use of the internet to verify historical data when producing a painting of a historical subject. The speach was well received.

In order to participate in this Show & Competition, you'll need to apply using our registration form.

You can print the registration form.

A few things to remember:

  • Artists MUST pre-register by November 5, 2007. Remember, you can mail these forms to me by Snail Mail or by e-mail. My address is josalsal@earthlink.net. If really pushed for time, you may register in advance by phone and pay at check-in-time but the sooner the better as this allows Sine and me time to organize the show. We really appreciate your help.
  • All work must be original. No sawtooth or “hole” clip hangers are allowed. If any piece is larger than 40X40, special arrangements must be made for display and a maximum of two oversized pieces are allowed
  • Ten entries are allowed per artist and ALL ART MUST HAVE BEEN COMPLETED WITHIN THE LAST 24 MONTHS.
  • Check our 20072008 yearbook for KAS and LSAG rules.
  • Tommy Humphrey will be our judge. He has judged our show in the past and did a wonderful job. His critiques are interesting and thorough. He is known for his scratchboard medium using black, white and watercolors using stipple or pointillism. His interest is the outdoors and wildlife which led him to paint wildlife. Mr. Humphrey also paints on clayboard which allows him to paint with other medium such as acrylics. He has an A.B.S. degree in commercial art and his work has been featured in many newspapers and magazines. Tommy is very proud of being a finalist in the Federal Duck Stamp competitions.
