The Prez Sez ...

The PREZ SEZ:Hello all you fabulously talented people, and welcome back to another year with the Kingwood Art Society.  We have a beautiful new meeting place, thanks to the generosity of the folks with Homewood Suites.  If you happen to see someone on staff before or after a meeting, please take a moment to thank them for working with us.

Being around creative people is a wonderful bonus for an artist, so try to make all the meetings.  Maybe we can also get our painting groups going again.  I love getting ideas from other artists.I've had a great year, artwise.  I took a chance and entered three national competitions.   I was accepted into two exhibitions and made the finals in another.  This just proves that you must keep on keeping on.  It's a real boost to your desire to create art when someone else validates artwork that you have done.  Why not take a chance and submit slides for your self?

I've been submitting to THE ARTIST'S MAGAZINE for years, and this is the first time I've had any success. I've had many artworks that went nowhere in competitions, also. If you have a piece that hasn't been awarded, don't think that it is a bad piece of art.  It could easily win something on another day and with another judge.  We all know how subjective art is.

Anyhow, our first show will be coming up in November, so get painting, sculpting, drawing, mixing those media, or whatever turns you on.  That's a good thing.

Art Display Opportunity
The new 20,000 square foot terminal at the Sugar Land Regional Airport was officially opened on June 1, 2006. The terminal building’s style can best be described as a combination of “Texas ranch” and “country club.” At the center of the spacious Lobby are two beautiful display walls created for the specific purpose of showcasing art from local art leagues. Our facility is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. and we see approximately 2,500 visitors per month. Our clientele drive here from Sugar Land and Houston, and fly in from all over the United States, as well as the world.

This a formal invitation to participate in this wonderful display opportunity. The Sugar Land Regional Airport will lease your league’s art display for a total of $10 for 30 days, with the option to renew for an additional 30 days. We prefer that your display have a theme (Sugar Land Area Artist's theme was “Scenes from Texas,” which matches our décor and has been very well received).
Congratulations

Some little goodies...

Good online art prices may be found at http://www.misterart.com (This is also a Texas Art site. If you pay for the VIP membership, you will save a good deal on items.) You will have to pay shipping, of course, but sometimes we simply can't leave home and make it downtown. Texas Art Supply is online at http://www.texasart.com.

Look up art terms at http://www.artlex.com

The wonderful array of products of the Golden Company may be found at http://www.goldenpaints.com. If you are having trouble ordering certain colors for the Golden Paints, particularly the iridescents, try ordering them from http://www.artcity.com. They are pretty quick with a mail order. Michael's usually has Golden fluid acrylics and iridescents, but only in small bottles and colors are usually missing. Texas Art has all the colors, but not all the iridescents.

The web site for the fabulous Mary Todd Beam is http://www.marytoddbeam.com. Mary's great book is Celebrate Your Creative Self. I think it is still available at Northlight Books at P.O. Box 9276, Central Islip, NY 11722-9276 phone 386-447-6359 or go to nlbc@mbsmm.com. Another excellent and useful book to get your creativity going is Arteffects by Jean Drysdale Green. Very good ideas may be found in Creative Collage Techniques by Nita Leland and Virginia Lee Williams.

Gerald Brommer has many good books out there, several on collage. His Watercolor and Collage Workshop is available through http://www.amazon.com for about $12.95. Mr. Brommer also showed me that if you want to make a dark painting or artwork "pop" put it inside a black mat! When you begin a two-dimensional artwork, draw a real or imaginary tic tac toe on your board or canvas. Put your center of interest/focal point, where the lines cross.

If you are running out of names for your art works, try a music or mythology dictionary. On the music side, you could title things something like Symphony in Blue and Gold, Barnyard Concerto, Sarabande in Red, or Ducklings in Chorus. I did a series of pots using titles such as Zeus' Pot, Hebe's Bowl, or Goblet of Ares. A wonderful, beautiful magazine is international Artist. You may write to International Artist Magazine, P.O. Box 469068, Escondido, CA 92046.

Good frames and framing supplies may be found at United MFRS Supplies, Inc. 80 Gordon Drive, Syosset, NY 11791. Phone is 800-645-7260. Web address is www.unitedmfrs.com If you call for catalogs, ask specifically for framing one. They also have super good prices on matboard and foamcore if purchased in 25 sheet lots. You do have to have a tax number, which you should have anyway if you sell your art...

The TUBE WRINGER is available from Texas Art for $9.74—get every last drop of paint out of those tubes!

The TWIRLER ($9.50 and SUPER SOFTSTRAND wire are from United Manufacturers. I use size 4 (25 lbs.). The spool is $21.40 and contains 825ft. The twirler first punches a hole in your wood frame for the metal eye, then inserts inside the eye to screw it in. I'm not sure if those prices are still the same.

United also has a French gallery system that is wonderful. You mount a track near your ceiling, hang rods with hooks off it, and you can change your paintings at will. I have one in my hallway.

Best heavy-body gesso is Utrecht. Gives tons of texture!

If you have to carry some paintings by the wire, take the cardboard tube from a pants hanger, slit it, and slip it over the wire. Cushions your hand wonderfully.

Price your paintings by the square inch. Takes all the guesswork out.
